this recipe has been handed down in my family for at least four generations maybe more !

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 2 - eggs
  • 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups each chopped candied cherries,pineapple,dates,and pecans
  • 1 cup each candied cherrie halves and pecan halves for garnish

How To Make grandmas fruit cookies

  • Step 1
    preheat oven to 375 degrees
  • Step 2
    cream brown sugar shortening and butter
  • Step 3
    add eggs and buttermilk
  • Step 4
    gradually add flour salt and baking soda
  • Step 5
    add chopped nuts and fruit
  • Step 6
    line cookie sheets with parchment paper
  • Step 7
    drop batter by spoonful leaving space between
  • Step 8
    garnish with half cherrie or pecan
  • Step 9
    bake 8 - 10 minutes or until browned on top and bottom
  • Step 10
    cool and enjoy !
