These are the very best chocolate chip cookies I have ever eaten. I have tried all kinds of "adds" and any one or all of them together are just delicious.

Makes 24-25 Big Cookies

shortening (i use crisco)
2/3 c
real butter
1 c
white sugar
1 c
brown sugar
1/2 tsp
2 large
2 tsp
vanilla extract
1 tsp
1 tsp
baking soda
3 1/2 c
6 oz
ghirardelli semi-sweet chocolate chips
6 oz
ghirardelli milk chocolate chips


1 c
toasted pecans
1/2 c
plain toffee bits
1/2 c
plain or toasted coconut

How to Make Grandma's Chocolate Chip Cookies


  • 1Heat oven to 375 degrees, Use Parchment paper on cookie sheet or use ungreased cookie sheet.
  • 2Thoroughly cream shortening and butter together.
  • 3Add white sugar and brown sugar and mix well; add eggs and beat thoroughly; add cinnamon, salt, and baking soda and mix well. Add vanilla and mix together.
  • 4Add flour (1 cup at a time) and mix well after each addition ending with the 1/2 cup.
  • 5Add the chocolate chips and any additions you choose. It is important to follow the order of the directions as stated.
  • 6Drop by big tablespoons onto cookie sheet 2" apart. Bake 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let sit for 1 minute before removing from cookie sheet.
