As a child my Grandmother would make these, I am so happy to share. These cookies are thick and soft. Times baking my vary with each oven. They are done when the toothpick somes out clean.

Ingredients

  • 2 c
    flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 Tbsp
    ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp
    nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground cloves
  • 1 tsp
    soda
  • 1/2 c
    molasses
  • 1/2 c
    shortening (crisco)
  • 1/2 c
    granulated sugas
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 c
    raisins
  • 1/2 c
    chopped walnuts (optional)

How to Make Grandma Dougan's Molasses Cookies

Step-by-Step

  1. Mix first 11 ingredients. Fold in raisins. Place in fridge overnight.
  2. The next day, preheat oven to 350.
  3. I baked them on cookies sheets w/parchment paper for approx 12 to 13 mins in my oven in Michigan.
  4. Cool completely on cooling rack
  5. My Grandmother frosted her's cookies with:
    4 1/2 c sifted powdered sugar
    1/2 C unsweetended cocoa (PDQ chocolate or Benco)
    1/2 C butter, softened
    1 tsp vanilla
    1/3 C boiling water
  6. Mix the powered sugar and cocoa. Add butter, boiling water and vanilla. Beat w/electric mixer on low until combine. Beat for 1 min on low speed. Cool for 20 - 30 mins. (This when Grandmas would have a cup of Maxwell House coffee)
  7. Frost Cookies and Enjoy
