Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup white or brown sugar, packed
- 1 large egg (not extra large)
- 1 1/2 tablespoons orange zest
- 2 tablespoons dark corn syrup or substitute molasses (more traditional)
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger (more, if you like)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
How To Make gingerbread boys
-
Step 1Cream butter and sugar together. Add egg, and mix well. Mix in orange zest (if using), and corn syrup or molasses. Add, remaining ingredients, mixing, until well combined.
-
Step 2Chill dough, several hours to overnight.
-
Step 3When ready to bake, preheat oven, to 375°F. Grease cookie sheets. Let refrigerated dough, sit on counter for a few minutes; then, on a lightly floured surface, roll out 1/4 or 1/3 size clumps, after kneading it slightly. Keep the dough that isn't being used yet, in the refrigerator.
-
Step 4Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes, using cookie cutters. Place cookies 1 inch apart, on prepared cookie sheets.
-
Step 5Bake cookie dough 10-12 minutes, until cookies are firm and lightly toasted on edges. Makes 5 dozen or 60 cookies.
