Linda Myers - this recipe comes from Great Aunt Minnie. A favorite of us all, it is a soft cookie and is better if it has aged a few days. Genevieve Enderes - makes great gingerbread men!

Ingredients

  • CREAM
  • 1 cup molasses/sorghum
  • 1 cup lard (no substitutions)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ADD
  • 1 cup boiling water in which 4 teaspoons baking soda has been dissolved
  • MIX ABOVE INGREDIENTS WELL, ADD
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 4 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

How To Make ginger cremes

  • Step 1
    Refrigerate overnight. Divide dough into 3 parts.
  • Step 2
    Using lots of flour, roll out about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes; sprinkle with sugar before baking.
  • Step 3
    Bake at 350 degrees on a well greased cookie sheet for 15 minutes until slightly brown on edges but still soft by the fingertip test (touch lightly, if done it will spring right back).
