I think this was from my mother's "Home and Garden" Cookbook Encyclopedia. It's the first cookie I learned to bake at age 9...so for over 50 years, it's still my favorite.

Makes 2 dozen
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 stick sweet cream butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 - egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
- FILLING
- 3 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1/4 cup water
- 3 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 cup chopped dates
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons lemon rind
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts
How To Make filled sugar cookies

Step 1Cill cookie dough for 1 hour. Roll to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut 2 for each cookie; fill centers only. Cover with 2nd cut-out, seal with fork around the edges

Step 2Bake at 375 for 10-15 minutes. Can also be filled with jelly or mincemeat.
