This was my grandmother's recipe that she made for the hollidays. It's a family favorite. It takes a little time to assemble but worth it.

Ingredients
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup shortening
- 2 - eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- opt. pinch nutmeg or cinnamon
- 1 pound raisins
- 1 pound dates, pitted
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup finely diced walnuts
How To Make filled cookies

Step 1Make the cookie dough and refrigerate several hours or overnight.

Step 2Filling: Grind the raisins and dates and add to sugar and water and bring to a boil then reduce heat to simmer and cook until thickened, stiring frequently.

Step 3Stir in nuts after mixture is cooked.

Step 4Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Step 5Roll out cookie dough on floured table and cut into circles about 3-31/2".

Step 6Put a generous teaspoon of the filling in the center of one of the circles and cover with another circle. Seal cookies by using a fork around the cookie.

Step 7Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until browned.
