These crunchy nut-sized cookies for All Soul's Day may get their name "sweet fava beans) - from being shaped just like the beans of the dead, but that doesn't mean that each tiny bite isn't full of almonds, spices, & the slight intoxication of rum

Ingredients

  • 1
    unpeeled almonds
  • 1/2 c
    turbonado sugar
  • 1/2
    lemon - zest
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 Tbsp
    rum
  • 1/2 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp
    ground cloves
  • 1/2 c
    unbleached all-purpose flour

How to Make Fave Dolci (Bean-Shaped Clove & Cinnamon Cookies)

Step-by-Step

  1. Grind the almonds to a coarse powder in a nut grinder and then pestle them with the sugar, or grind the nuts with 2 TBL of the sugar in a food processor fitted with the steel blade.
  2. Transfer to a large bowl & mix in the lemon zest, egg, & rum; mix until blended. Add the spices and flour and stir until the dough is well blended
  3. Divide the dough into 4 pieces, Flour a work surface very lightly & roll each piece into a log the width of a finger. cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces and flatten them slightly. Place 1 inch apart on oiled or parchment-lined baking sheets.
  4. Baking - Heat oven to 350 degrees. Bake until just barely browned - 16-18 minutes
  5. Serve with espresso :)
