This recipe has been handed down at least 4 generations that I know of. It is made often because the ingredients are almost always on hand.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter or butter flavored shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 - egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla or almond extract
  • 2 1/2 cups flour

How To Make european shortbread

  • Step 1
    Cream sugar, eggs, butter and vanilla. Add flour mix well. Roll out on lightly floured surface and cut into rectangles or use a shortbread mold. Bake 12 to 15 minutes at 350 degrees.
  • Step 2
    I use this the basis for many variations. Sometimes I add nuts. Sometime chopped cranberries or grated orange or lemon peel.
