date chopped cookies

I have no idea where this recipe originated but my twin sister gave me this recipe over 35 years ago and it has remained one of my favorites ever since!!

yield makes 3 1/2 dozen depending on what size you make them

Ingredients

  • COOKIES:
  • 3 1/2 cups ap flour or ww works good too
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or sour milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • FILLING:
  • 2 cups chopped dates
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or whatever you like....walnuts are good too

How To Make date chopped cookies

  • Step 1
    Combine all filling ingredients and cook in a small pot till thick, stirring constantly. Set aside to cool.
  • Step 2
    Stir together, flour, cinnamon, cardamom, salt and baking soda. Cream together butter and brown sugar....add eggs, milk and vanilla. Add dry ingredients and mix well. Drop dough by teaspoon full on an ungreased cookie sheet, flatten a little , place 1/2 tsp date mixture on top of dough followed by 1/2 tsp more dough Bake 350 for approx 15 mins
