This is another recipe from my husband's family. It's considered top secret by some, but I'm willing to take the risk and share it with y'all! :)

Ingredients

  • 3 c
    chopped dates
  • 1/4 c
    sugar
  • 1 1/2 c
    water
  • 1 1/2 c
    uncooked rolled oats - quick cook (not instant) oatmeal
  • 1 c
    brown sugar
  • 1 3/4 c
    sifted all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 3/4 c
    shortening

How to Make Date Bars

Step-by-Step

  1. Combine chopped dates, sugar and water in a sauce pan and cook about 10 minutes, stirring frequently to keep from sticking. Set aside and let cool.
  2. Combine in a bowl using your hands to mix the rolled oats, brown sugar, flour, salt and shortening.
  3. Spread 1/2 of the oatmeal mixture into a 9x13" pan and pat down evenly. Top with the date mixture, spreading it evenly over the crust.
  4. Spread the rest of the oat mixture on top evenly and bake at 400 degrees until ightly browned around the edges, about 25-30 minutes.
  5. Let cool and cut into bars.
