This is another recipe from my husband's family. It's considered top secret by some, but I'm willing to take the risk and share it with y'all! :)

Ingredients

  • 3 cups chopped dates
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups uncooked rolled oats - quick cook (not instant) oatmeal
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups sifted all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening

How To Make date bars

  • Step 1
    Combine chopped dates, sugar and water in a sauce pan and cook about 10 minutes, stirring frequently to keep from sticking. Set aside and let cool.
  • Step 2
    Combine in a bowl using your hands to mix the rolled oats, brown sugar, flour, salt and shortening.
  • Step 3
    Spread 1/2 of the oatmeal mixture into a 9x13" pan and pat down evenly. Top with the date mixture, spreading it evenly over the crust.
  • Step 4
    Spread the rest of the oat mixture on top evenly and bake at 400 degrees until ightly browned around the edges, about 25-30 minutes.
  • Step 5
    Let cool and cut into bars.
