czechoslovcian kolache cookies

This recipe was given to me many, many years ago. So long ago that I don't remember which of my friends gave it to me. I was fortunate to have a number of friends who were fantastic bakers.

Ingredients For czechoslovcian kolache cookies

  • 3 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1 c
    butter, softened
  • 1/4 c
    sugar
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 1/4 oz pkg
    active dry yeast
  • 1/2 c
    warm milk (105* to 115*)
  • 1 lg
    egg
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1/2 c
    apricot preserves ***
  • One lg
    egg,. well beaten
  • GLAZE
  • 2/3 c
    powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp
    almond extract
  • 2 to 3 tsp
    milk

How To Make czechoslovcian kolache cookies

    Heat oven to 350°

    Combine flour, butter, surgar and salt in a bowl. Beat at low speed until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

    Dissolve yeast in warm milk in another bowl. Stir in 1 egg and vanilla. Add milk mixture to flour mixture. Beat at low speed until well mixed.

    Divide dough in half. Roll out dough on lightly floured surface, one half at a time, to 1/8 to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut dough onto 3 inch squares. Top each square with 1 teaspoon preserves. Bring up two opposite corners of each square to center. Pinch tightly to seal.

    Place 2 inches apart onto greased cookie sheets. Brush with 1 beaten egg. Bake 10 to 15 minutes or until light brown. Cool completely.

    Combine powdered sugar, almond extract and enough milk for desired glazing consistency. Drizzle over cooled cookies.
