This is one of my Family Heirloom recipes, that my Norwegian Grandma was making at least as early as the 1920s, when my Mom was just a little girl. It is a cake-like cookie, that seems to get better as it sits.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 5 cups flour, maybe a little less
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 cup strong, hot coffee

How To Make cry babies~ a molasses cookie

  • Step 1
    Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy.
  • Step 2
    Mix in eggs.
  • Step 3
    Add spices, and 4 to 5 cups of flour, to make a very thick dough.
  • Step 4
    Mix in hot coffee and vinegar.
  • Step 5
    Drop by spoonfuls onto cookie sheet (I line with parchment).
  • Step 6
    Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes,
