This recipe is mixed on top the stove, all in one pan and baked.

I try to cut down on the amount of sugar in most of my recipes so for this one:
I use 2 cups of brown sugar, the recipe calls for 2 1/4 cups. I also decrease the flour by 2 tablespoons and salt by 1/4 teaspoon.

Ingredients

  • 2/3 c
    shortening
  • 2 1/4 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 2 3/4 c
    all purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 3
    eggs, beaten
  • 1 Tbsp
    vanilla extract
  • 2 c
    semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 c
    nuts, chopped

How to Make Congo Squares

Step-by-Step

  1. Combine flour, baking powder and salt, set aside.
  2. Melt shortening, stir in brown sugar. Cool slightly.
  3. Add dry ingredients gradually with eggs.
  4. Stir in rest of ingredients.
  5. Put into a greased and floured 9x13 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.
