I've been making these for years. You can of course top the shortbread with anything you like -- jam or preserves, chocolate, nuts, gum drops, streusel -- let your imagination soar!

Ingredients
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 8 oz - chopped dates
- 10 oz jars maraschino cherries, coarsely chopped
- 1 cup flaked coconut
- 14 oz cans sweetened condensed milk
How To Make christmas shortbread bars

Step 1Preheat oven to 300. Lightly spray 7-1/2 x 11-3/4 (or 9 x 13; adjust baking time accordingly) pan with cooking spray. Cream together sugar and butter (you may substitute margarine but the flavor is not as good). Stir in flour until all is incorporated. Press into prepared pan (will seem dry and floury --that's OK!)

Step 2Top with layers of dates, cherries, coconut; drizzle condensed milk over all.

Step 3Bake until top is lightly browned, about 35-40 minutes; if using larger pan, check at 25 minutes. Cool completely before cutting.
