This recipe was originally taken by my great-grandmother from the Ladies Page of The Dothan Eagle on December 11, 1941. The recipe claims (and my sailor brother can agree) that these pack and travel well to distant service members!

Ingredients
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 cup walnuts, chopped
- 4 - chocolate, unsweetened squares, melted
- 1/2 - baking powder
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 box powdered sugar
How To Make chocolate walnut surprises

Step 1Cream butter and sugar. Beat in melted chocolate, vanilla and eggs. Beat in remaining ingredients, except walnuts or powdered sugar.

Step 2Line baking pan with waxed paper. Pour batter into pan. Sprinkle with chopped walnuts. Bake at 350F for 25 minutes.

Step 3Allow to cool in pan, then cut into bars. Roll bars in powdered sugar.
