On the recipe card Gramma Bea says this recipe came out of "The Spry Cook Book". I am only guessing here but I bet this recipe is from the 1950's. It is a wonderful soft cookie that always shows up on our Christmas cookie tray.
1Combine shortening, brown sugar, egg, melted chocolate, vanilla & salt. Beat well. Add flour, soda & buttermilk. Mix well. If you want to you can add the chopped walnuts now. Drop by teaspoons on the cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 12 minutes.
Cool and frost with a chocolate frosting & place 1/2 walnut or pecan on each cookie.
