This recipe won me the title "Cookie Queen of Company 85" of the US Navy Basic Training in the 80's! The credit goes to Quaker Oats as it is the recipe on their box many, many, many decades ago - and still the best!

Ingredients
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 - eggs - jumbo
- 3 cups old fashioned oats
- 1 package chocolate chips
- - nuts (optional)
How To Make chocolate chip oatmeal cookies (olde recipe)

Step 1Mix all sugar and shortening.

Step 2Add eggs, vanilla, baking soda and flour Mix.

Step 3Add Oatmeal. Mix. Dough should not be so moist as to be sticky. If too moist. Add a little flour and mix.

Step 4Add chocolate chips. Stir in by hand as mixer might break them.

Step 5Spoon onto greased cookie sheet. Taller balls will aid in making softer cookies.

Step 6Bake at 375 for a few minutes on one shelf; then a few minutes on the other shelf.

Step 7Cook on waxed paper (with newspaper underneath). To keep cookies soft, put a slice of bread in the container with the cookies.
