Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups oatmeal, uncooked
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 teaspoon soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon water
- 8 ounces dates
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup white sugar
How To Make chinese chews

Step 1Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix oatmeal, flour, brown sugar, shortening, soda, salt, and water together. (Set aside a little less than half.)

Step 2Bring dates, water, and white sugar to a boil in a 1 quart saucepan, allow to boil slowly for approximately 10 minutes until mixture thickens.

Step 3Press the oatmeal mixture evenly in the bottom of a 9 x 13 pan. Spread the date mixture over this layer, then cover with remaining oatmeal mixture. Bake at 400 degrees for 12 minutes.
