My mother made these every Christmas and everyone always loved them.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups oatmeal, uncooked
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 8 ounces dates
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white sugar

How To Make chinese chews

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix oatmeal, flour, brown sugar, shortening, soda, salt, and water together. (Set aside a little less than half.)
  • Step 2
    Bring dates, water, and white sugar to a boil in a 1 quart saucepan, allow to boil slowly for approximately 10 minutes until mixture thickens.
  • Step 3
    Press the oatmeal mixture evenly in the bottom of a 9 x 13 pan. Spread the date mixture over this layer, then cover with remaining oatmeal mixture. Bake at 400 degrees for 12 minutes.
