I was bored today and started playing around in the kitchen. This is what I came up with. I feel that some of the best recipes happen when you're hungry. A well-stocked kitchen is a great place to play on a cool fall day.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

Caramel apples and fall go together like peas and carrots. The hint of spices makes these caramel apple cookies perfect for fall. They are soft, sticky, and gooey. There's a slight crunch from the walnuts and a subtle burst of sweetness from the bits of chopped apples.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups chopped apples (I used Honeycrisp)
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 - bag of Kraft caramels
  • 3/4 cup walnuts

How To Make caramel apple cookies

  • Creaming shortening, sugars, and eggs.
    Step 1
    Cream together the shortening, sugars, and eggs.
  • Adding buttermilk and chopped apples.
    Step 2
    Add buttermilk and apples; stir well.
  • Dry ingredients and spices added.
    Step 3
    Add dry ingredients and spices.
  • Stirring in caramel and walnuts.
    Step 4
    Stir in caramel bits and walnuts.
  • Drops of dough on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet.
    Step 5
    Place teaspoon drops on a well-greased baking pan.
  • Baked Caramel Apple Cookies cooling.
    Step 6
    Bake at 350 F for about 10 mins.
