Nothing says Christmas like these candy cane cookies. Not only are they cute and fun to make, but they taste delicious. They are super fun to make, especially if you have a child or grandchild help you make them. It just isn't Christmas time without a plate of these tasty treats. Recipe is my own.

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 cup powder sugar
- 1 - egg
- 1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring drops
- 1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy
- 1/2 cup sugar
How To Make candy cane cookies-annette's

Step 1Preheat oven to 375°F. Mix butter, shortening, powder sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla.

Step 2Blend in flour and salt.

Step 3Divide dough in half; blend food color into one half.

Step 4Shape 1 tsp. dough from each half into 4 inch ropes. Place ropes side by side; press together lightly and twist. Complete cookies one at a time.

Step 5Place on ungreased baking sheet. Curve top down to form handle of candy cane.

Step 6Bake 9 minutes or until set and very light brown. Mix candy and granulated sugar. Immediately sprinkle cookies with candy mixture; remove from baking sheet to cooling rack. Enjoy!
