This is one of the Christmas cookies I used to bake with my mother when I was a little girl. It is a special recipe in our family, not sure how old it is, but it has been around at least since the 70's lol!

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c
    butter
  • 1/2 c
    shortening
  • 1 c
    powdered sugar
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    almond extract
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 2 1/2 c
    flour
  • 1 tsp
    salt
  • ·
    red food coloring drops

How to Make Candy Cane Cookies

Step-by-Step

  1. preheat oven to 350
  2. Cream butter, shortening and sugar.
  3. add egg and extracts.
  4. Add dry ingredients. Separate dough evenly into two bowls and using red food coloring, tint half of dough to desired shade of red.
  5. Take a walnut sized piece of red dough and a walnut sized piece of white dough. Separately, roll each color on a lightly floured surface, into a rope. Place the two ropes side by side, gently press together, and twist the two ropes to form a spiral and then shape each cookie into a cane shape by bending one end into a hook shape. Place the cookies on an ungreased baking sheet.
  6. Bake 8-9 minutes until browned.
  7. I often bake this cookie without making the candy cane shape. I make them round and then do the criss cross with the tines of a fork that you often see on peanut butter cookies and sprinkle with colored sugar!
