BUTTERMILK COOKIES:

1/2 c
butter, softened
1 c
granulated sugar
1
egg
1 tsp
vanilla extract
2 1/2 c
flour
1/2 tsp
baking soda
1/2 tsp
salt
1/2 c
buttermilk

CHOCOLATE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING:

1/2 c
butter, room temperature
1/4 c
shortening
1/3 c
unsweetened cocoa powder
2 c
confectioners' sugar
2 Tbsp
milk

How to Make Buttermilk Cookies with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

Step-by-Step

  • 1For the cookies: in a bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla.
  • 2Combine flour, baking soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk and mix well.
  • 3Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool.
  • 4Combine the frosting ingredients; beat until smooth. Frost the cooled cookies. Top with chopped nuts if desired.
