Spritz cookies have a buttery shortbread flavor and are essential for any Christmas cookie platter. Decorate Spritz cookies with your favorite goodies like colored sanding sugar or sprinkles. Swap out the disc in a Spritz cookie press, and you can create uniform cookies in fun shapes. Fun to make, package in a cellophane bag, they make great gifts. That's if they make it off the cooling rack after everyone snags "just one."

Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
How To Make basic spritz cookies

Step 1With a mixer, mix butter and shortening thoroughly.

Step 2Add sugar, gradually, continuing to beat for about 5 minutes until light and fluffy.

Step 3Add egg and vanilla extract; beat well.

Step 4Lightly spoon flour into a measuring cup and level off.

Step 5Blend flour, baking powder, and salt.

Step 6Add flour in 3 additions. The batter will be stiff.

Step 7Fill and assemble the cookie gun. Use your desired disc.

Step 8Press cookies.

Step 9Decorate with colored sugar at this stage.

Step 10Bake for 10-12 minutes at 375 F or until cookies just start to turn golden around the edges.

Step 11Be careful not to overbake. Makes about 6-7 dozen cookies.
