These are one of my grandsons favorite cookies. I had asked a friend to send me their Anise Cookie recipe several years ago and the format didn't come through on my computer properly, so I took what came through and made it into my own recipe. Mine came out much lighter, and everyone loved them. So I stuck with my version. Here it is....

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 bottle anise extract
  • 4 - eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • FROSTING
  • 1 pound confectioner's sugar
  • 1/2 bottle anise exract
  • - warm water

How To Make anise cookies

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350°. Cream together shortening, butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beat at medium after each addition. Add 1/2 bottle of Anise extract, beat until mixed. Add flour, salt and baking powder, beat at medium until mixed. Drop by teaspoonful onto ungreased cookie sheet, bake at 350° for 12-15 minutes. Let cool and frost with Anise Frosting below.
  • Step 2
    Frosting: Mix together Anise extract and sugar. Add warm water a little at a time until icing is correct consistency for spreading
  • Step 3
    You can add a drop of food coloring to frosting to make them any color you want.
