These are delicious. A real hit with friends and family. These bars are sweet but not overly so. I added HEATH BITS'O BRICKLE Bits to the original recipe for a little more of a toffee flavor. I found this recipe in "The Silver Palate Cookbook."

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 - egg yolk
  • 2 cups unbleached white flour
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup shelled walnuts or pecans, corsely chopped
  • 3/4 cup heath bits'o brickle toffee bits

How To Make toffee bars

  • Step 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9 x 12 inch baking pan.
  • Step 2
Cream butter and sugar. add egg yolk; beat well.
  • Step 3
Sift in flour, mixing well, then stir in vanilla. Spread batter in the prepared pan. Bake 25 minutes.
  • Step 4
Cover cake layer with chocolate chips and return to oven for 3-4 minutes.
  • Step 5
Remove pan from oven and spread melted chocolate evenly. Sprinkle with nuts and toffee bits. Cool completely in pan before cutting.
  • Step 6
I have always used pecans so I can only say atest to the wonderful flavor of these. I am sure walnuts would be good and also add a much stronger "nut" flavor.
