texas brownies (oven version)
These tender brownies are quick to prepare, using ingredients that are handy in the kitchen. This recipe makes a large pan. Great for a potluck. Oven Temp: 400 degrees F Tips: If you don't have buttermilk on hand, substitute 2 teaspoons vinegar or lemon juice. Mix into 1/2 cup milk. Or use powdered buttermilk. Mix according to package directions.

Ingredients
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 cup strong brewed coffee or water
- 1/4 cup dark, unsweetened cocoa
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 - eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- FROSTING
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
- 2 tablespoons dark cocoa
- 1/4 cup milk
- 3 1/2 cups unsifted powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
How To Make texas brownies (oven version)

Step 1Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Step 2In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and the sugar.

Step 3Set aside.

Step 4In heavy saucepan, combine butter, shortening, coffee or water and cocoa.

Step 5Stir and heat to boiling.

Step 6Pour boiling mixture over the flour and sugar in the bowl.

Step 7Add the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla.

Step 8Mix well, using a wooden spoon or high speed on electric mixer.

Step 9Pour into a well buttered 17 & 1/2-by-11-inch jelly roll pan.

Step 10Bake at 400 degrees F for 20 minutes or until brownies test done in the center.

Step 11While brownies bake, prepare the frosting. In a saucepan, combine the butter, cocoa and milk.

Step 12Heat to boiling, stirring.

Step 13Mix in the powdered sugar and vanilla until frosting is smooth.

Step 14Pour warm frosting over brownies as soon as you take them out of the oven.

Step 15Cool.
