My favorite kind of brownie is one that has frosting. These are good to bring to a potluck because they make lots.

Ingredients

2 c
all-purpose flour
2 c
granulated sugar
1/2 c
butter or margarine
1/2 c
shortening
1 c
strong brewed coffee or water
1/4 c
unsweetened cocoa
1/2 c
buttermilk
2
eggs
1 tsp
baking soda
1 tsp
vanilla

FROSTING:

1/2 c
butter or margarine
2 Tbsp
dark cocoa
1/4 c
milk
3 1/2 c
unsifted powdered sugar
1 tsp
vanilla

How to Make Texas Brownies

Step-by-Step

  • 1Combine flour and sugar in a large bowl. Combine butter, shortening, coffee or water, cocoa in a large heavy saucepan. Stir and heat to boiling.
  • 2Pour boiling mixture over dry ingredients. Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla. Mix well with a wooden spoon. You can also use an electric mixer on high.
  • 3Pour into a well-greased 17 1/2x11 inch jelly roll pan. Bake for 20 minutes at 400 degrees or until brownies test done.
  • 4Prepare frosting while brownies bake. Combine butter, cocoa, and milk. Heat to boiling, stirring. Mix in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
  • 5Pour warm frosting over the brownies as soon as you take them out of the oven. Cool and cut into 48 bars.
