This is a very old recipe handed down to my mother from her mother then handed down to me. I love this frosting on any cake, vanilla or chocolate, but it is especially good on a Black Magic Cake.

6 oz
1 oz. squares of unsweetened chocloate
3 large
egg yolks
1 1/4 c
3/4 c
1 1/2 Tbsp
1 pinch
2 tsp
pure vanilla extract
2 1/2 tsp
instant coffee

How to Make Soft Chocolate Frosting for Black Magic Cake


  • 1Melt chocolate in saucepan over hot water. Beat egg yolks in heavy saucepan until very thick. Add Sugar and beat smoothly together.
  • 2Add milk, instant coffee and butter, stirring well. cook over very low to med.low heat, stirring constantly until it comes to a boil. Cook for 1 minute only after it reaches the boiling point.
  • 3Remove from heat, stir in chocolate, add salt and vanilla. Beat until it reaches a good spreading concistency. It will spread nicely.
  • 4Makes enough to use between two layers and to frost the top and sides of cake. Note: this frosting has glossy appearance and stays soft.
