Years ago I was looking for a hot chocolate recipe to mimic the one in the movie "Chocolat". I found this one. Tho' it doesn't have the spicy pepper that the movie's chocolate did and,of course, I have no idea what it actually tasted like, I discovered that by adding a halved jalapeno or a dried hot pepper to the water as it boils, you can get the kick as well.Remove the pepper to complete the process of making the hot chocolate. While it takes a little effort, it's so worth it!

1/2 c
water
3 oz
semi-sweet chocolate
2 c
milk
1 tsp
cinnamon
1/8 tsp
almond flavoring

How to Make Mexican Hot Chocolate

Step-by-Step

  • 1Boil water. Remove from heat, add chocolate. Wait 1 minute. Whisk until melted.
  • 2On medium high, gradually whisk in milk, cinnamon & almond flavoring. Cook to full boil, whisking frequently. Remove from heat to allow bubbles to subside. Replace on burner. Boil again. Repeat 3 times.
  • 3Lower heat to simmer. Simmer 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Cocoa should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Turn off the heat, blend with a hand-blender until top is nice and foamy.
    Serve immediately.
