Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups margarine
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup walnuts, coarsely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 pound chocolate, suitable for dipping
  • 3/4 cup pecans

How To Make toffee

  • Step 1
    **Have soda ready at the stove to add at once.
  • Step 2
    Melt butters slowly; add sugar, water and salt.
  • Step 3
    Cook at low heat, stirring constantly until it reaches 212 degrees.
  • Step 4
    STOP STIRRING until candy reaches 236 degrees.
  • Step 5
    Add the walnuts and stir constantly until candy reaches 290 degrees.
  • Step 6
    Remove from heat and add soda, stirring well.
  • Step 7
    Pour onto buttered cookie sheet.
  • Step 8
    Immediately cut into squares.
  • Step 9
    Will run back together, but can be cracked where cut.
  • Step 10
    Add dipping chocolate (chips/squares) on top.
  • Step 11
    They will melt and you can spread them out.
  • Step 12
    Sprinkle nuts on top (optional).
