home made caramels

I made candies & cookies & small loaves of flavored breads for Christmas boxes & gave them away. I always made what I call Turtle Eggs & this is the caramel I used in them. Turtle Eggs are turtles that I chop the pecans up in & form them in a Tupperware deviled egg container to look like eggs.

Ingredients

  • - 1 cup butter or margarine
  • - 16 oz. brown sugar
  • - 1/8 tsp. salt
  • - 1 cup light corn syrup
  • - 1 14oz can of sweetened condensed milk
  • - 1 teaspoon vanilla

How To Make home made caramels

  • Step 1
    Melt butter in a heavy saucepan.
  • Step 2
    Add brown sugar and salt.
  • Step 3
    Stir until thoroughly combined.
  • Step 4
    Stir in corn syrup and mix well.
  • Step 5
    Gradually add milk, stirring constantly.
  • Step 6
    Cook and stir over medium heat until candy reaches firm ball stage or 245° on candy thermometer. About 12 to 15 min.
  • Step 7
    Remove from heat, stir in vanilla.
  • Step 8
    Pour into a buttered 9 inch square pan.
  • Step 9
    Cool and cut into squares.
  • Step 10
    May also use to make Turtles or Millionaires candy.
