Another of my Momma's Christmas cookies. Every Christmas would find these on Momma's groaning table of cookies and candies! She would batch up a variety to give to her friends and family. Everyone waited for their bag from Ms. Bernice!

Ingredients

  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 1 c
    flour
  • dash(es)
    salt
  • 1 c
    pecans, chopped
  • 1
    egg
  • 3 tsp
    water
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 c
    dates, chopped
  • ·
    powdered sugar

How to Make Chewy Chews

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 7 1/2 x 11" pan.
  2. Beat egg, add sugar, vanilla and water. Add flour, baking powder, salt and beat well.
  3. Add pecans and dates. Mix well.
  4. Spread mixture in pan and bake until golden brown. Cut in squares. Cool and drench in powdered sugar. This is a rather sticky dough since no shortening is used.
