caramel squares

this is my late Aunt's recipe. she used to make this every year for christmas and the whole family would fight over them. i have changed it a little bit, but not much. hope ya'll enjoy it!

Ingredients

  • 1-10 ounce pkg. caramel squares, unwrapped
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk, divided
  • 1 box german chocolate or devils food cake mix
  • 1 stick butter, melted, divided
  • 1 package chocolate chips

How To Make caramel squares

  • Step 1
    preheat oven to 375. mix half the box of cake with 1/3 c. sweetened condensed milk and 1/2 c. butter.
  • Step 2
    press into a greased 13x9 pan.
  • Step 3
    bake for 10-12 minutes.
  • Step 4
    put unwrapped caramel in a microwave safe bowl with 1/3 c. sweetened condensed milk, heat till melted. stirring at 1 min intervals.
  • Step 5
    pour melted caramel on "cake", add chocolate chips.
  • Step 6
    mix other half cake mix same as above. make small "patties" with it.
  • Step 7
    cover chocolate chips with the "patties". bake for another 10-12 minutes
  • Step 8
    cool completely. cut into 1 in squares.
