waldorf astoria cake

This recipe if from one of my Grand mothers recipe book. She put lots of love in this cake when she made it.

yield Makes 6 to 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 - eggs
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1 ounce red food color
  • 2 cups flour (sifted)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • FROSTING PART 1
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • - pinch of salt
  • FROSTING PART 2
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup crisco

How To Make waldorf astoria cake

  • Step 1
    Mix vinegar and soda, set aside. Cream sugar with shortening and add eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and food color and add to creamed mixture.
  • Step 2
    Add buttermilk,salt, and flour alternately. Add vanilla then soda and vinegar.
  • Step 3
    Beat well and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes in two well oiled and floured pans. Cool and split each layer to make 4 thin layers
  • Step 4
    FROSTING PART 1: Cook over low flame until thickened, remove from heat and add 1 stick butter. Chill mixture.
  • Step 5
    FROSTING PART 2: Add to first part and beat at high speed until fluffy. Ice after putting layers together. Garnish with Coconut.
