I've been searching for the perfect buttercream frosting recipe for a very long time. And trust me, this is it (coming from a skeptic and critic).

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup crisco shortening
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon meringue powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (clear vanilla extract for pure white frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons milk (or water)

How To Make vanilla buttercream frosting

  • Step 1
    Add shortening and butter into bowl. Cream together until well-blended. (You can use a stand mixer, hand mixer, or even mix it by hand if you have to).
  • Step 2
    Add vanilla and milk.
  • Step 3
    Whisk in meringue powder into powdered sugar. Add powdered sugar into the bowl, one cup at a time; beating on a low speed.
  • Step 4
    If your frosting is too stiff, you can add more milk, one tablespoon at a time. If your frosting is too thin, just add a little more powdered sugar until you get your desired consistency.
