I've been searching for the perfect buttercream frosting recipe for a very long time. And trust me, this is it (coming from a skeptic and critic).

Ingredients

  • 1/2 c
    crisco shortening
  • 1/2 c
    unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 Tbsp
    meringue powder
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract (clear vanilla extract for pure white frosting)
  • 4 c
    powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 Tbsp
    milk (or water)

How to Make Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

Step-by-Step

  1. Add shortening and butter into bowl. Cream together until well-blended. (You can use a stand mixer, hand mixer, or even mix it by hand if you have to).
  2. Add vanilla and milk.
  3. Whisk in meringue powder into powdered sugar. Add powdered sugar into the bowl, one cup at a time; beating on a low speed.
  4. If your frosting is too stiff, you can add more milk, one tablespoon at a time. If your frosting is too thin, just add a little more powdered sugar until you get your desired consistency.
