I've been searching for the perfect buttercream frosting recipe for a very long time. And trust me, this is it (coming from a skeptic and critic).

1/2 c
crisco shortening
1/2 c
unsalted butter, softened
1 Tbsp
meringue powder
1 tsp
vanilla extract (clear vanilla extract for pure white frosting)
4 c
powdered sugar, sifted
2 Tbsp
milk (or water)

How to Make Vanilla Buttercream Frosting


  • 1Add shortening and butter into bowl. Cream together until well-blended. (You can use a stand mixer, hand mixer, or even mix it by hand if you have to).
  • 2Add vanilla and milk.
  • 3Whisk in meringue powder into powdered sugar. Add powdered sugar into the bowl, one cup at a time; beating on a low speed.
  • 4If your frosting is too stiff, you can add more milk, one tablespoon at a time. If your frosting is too thin, just add a little more powdered sugar until you get your desired consistency.
