upside down apple toffee brownies

Ingredients
- 8 tablespoons butter, plus extra for greasing
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 2 - eggs, slightly beaten
- 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 1/2 teaspoons apple pie spice
- 2 - apples, peeled and coarsely grated
- 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped
- TOFFEE APPLE TOPPING
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 - apple, cored and thinly sliced
How To Make upside down apple toffee brownies

Step 1Preheat oven to 350º. Grease a shallow 9" square baking pan. To make the topping, place the sugar and butter in a small saucepan and heat gently, stirring, until melted. Pour into the pan and arrange the apple slices over the mixture.

Step 2To make the brownies, place the butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat together until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and apple pie spice, and fold into the mixture. Stir in the apples and nuts, then pour into the pan.

Step 3Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until firm and golden. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Cut into squares.
