This recipe came from my mother who got it from a co-worker years ago. She only made it once that I remember, but I've made it many times. Kids love this treat! It's amazing how much these cake bars resemble the real thing!

Ingredients

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk, 2% or whole
  • 1/2 cup crisco
  • 1 cup sugar or splenda
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened

How To Make twinkie cake

  • Step 1
    Bake cake as directed. Cool and split cake in two layers.
  • Step 2
    Heat milk and flour until thick, stirring frequently. Let cool.
  • Step 3
    Beat butter and crisco until creamy. Add sugar or splenda and beat 4 minutes more. Add vanilla and beat an additional 4 minutes.
  • Step 4
    Add butter mixture to cooled milk and flour. Continue beating 4 minutes.
  • Step 5
    Spread filling between cake layers and refridgerate at least 2 hours. Cut cake into bars the size of twinkies.
