Ingredients

2 c
all-purpose flour
2 c
granulated sugar
1/2 c
butter or margarine (1 stick)
1/2 c
shortening
1 c
brewed coffee (or water)
1/4 c
unsweetened cocoa
1/2 c
buttermilk
2
eggs
1 tsp
baking soda
1 tsp
vanilla

FROSTING

1/2 c
butter or margarine (1 stick)
2 Tbsp
unsweetened cocoa
1/4 c
milk
3 1/2 c
powdered sugar (one pound box less 1/4 cup)
1 tsp
vanilla

How to Make Texas Sheet Cake

Step-by-Step

  • 1Combine flour & sugar in a large mixing bowl.
  • 2In a heavy saucepan, combine butter, shortening, coffee or water, & cocoa. Stir & heat to boiling.
  • 3Pour boiling mixture into the flour & sugar in the bowl. Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda & vanilla.
  • 4Mix well with spoon or electric mixer.
  • 5Pour into a greased jelly roll pan (17-1/2 x 11 inches).
  • 6Bake at 400 degrees F for 20 minutes.
  • 7While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting. In the same sauce pan, combine the butter, cocoa & milk. Heat to boiling, stirring.
  • 8Remove from heat. Mix in the powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.
  • 9Pour warm frosting over the cake as soon as you take it out of the oven. Top with chopped pecans, walnuts, mini M&Ms, etc. as desired. Cool.
