tarred roof cake!

This is popular at gatherings in our small town, and it was also called: Tar Paper Cake. My husband adores this cake, it's HIS FAVORITE BIRTHDAY CAKE. He is a builder, and when a roof is built, it is closed in and a layer of "tar paper" is nailed on the roof before it is shingled.This "tar paper" is the unsweetened layer of chocolate that is spread over the white frosting on a white cake!

Ingredients

  • 1 package white cake mix, baked according to directions
  • OR FOR A HOMEMADE CAKE:
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup crisco/shortening
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 - eggs, unbeaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • MAKE CAKE AND COOL. MAKE VANILLA, BUTTERCREAM FROSTING, FROST THE CAKE
  • 3 - chocolate, unsweetened squares
  • 1 tablespoon butter, stirred into melted chocolate

How To Make tarred roof cake!

  • Step 1
    Sift flour,sugar,baking powder and salt. Set aside. Soften shortening in a large bowl. Stir in the dry ingredients, add 3/4 cup milk, beat 2 mins. Add eggs, vanilla and last of the milk. Beat 1 minute more.
  • Step 2
    Preheat oven 350 degrees. Prepare a 9X13X2 inch pan, grease and dust with flour (or use two 9-inch layers). Pour in batter. Bake 30-35 mins.
  • Step 3
    Cool the cake. Prepare frosting and spread on cooled cake.
  • Step 4
    Melt the chocolate, cool slightly, then spread on hardened white frosting. This will harden. I like to refrigerate it to hasten the process.
