2Sift together cornmeal, flour, sugar, and salt.
To buttermilk (or sweet milk soured with 2 tbsp vinegar) add baking soda and stir.
Combine sour milk, egg and dry ingredients and mix well.
Place 2 tbsp butter in hot frying pan and return to oven until butter is bubbling.
Pour cornmeal batter into frying pan; wait 1 or 2 minutes, until sides start to cook.
Pour 1 cup sweet milk around top of spider.
3Bake 25 to 35 minutes until done, should be firm but not hard.
