spicy applesauce cake

This is my favorite applesauce cake! I use our home- made chunky applesauce when apples are in season. If needed, put in food processor to break up big pieces and drain as needed. This is a yummy, moist cake. Add a dollop of whipped cream or creamy frosting and it becomes an even better dessert.

Ingredients

  • CAKE
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon allspice
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening (part lard/mostly butter)
  • 2 cups applesauce, unsweetened
  • 2 - eggs
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup raisins
  • TOPPING
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar, firmly packed

How To Make spicy applesauce cake

  • Step 1
    Except for sugar: whisk all dry ingredients together in large bowl, set aside.
  • Step 2
    Cream butter and sugar, then add lightly beaten eggs, dry ingredients, and applesauce beat until mixed well. Stir in nuts, chips and raisins.
  • Step 3
    Pour into greased 9x13 pan. Combine topping ingredients and sprinkle over batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until tests done.
