spicy applesauce cake
This is my favorite applesauce cake! I use our home- made chunky applesauce when apples are in season. If needed, put in food processor to break up big pieces and drain as needed. This is a yummy, moist cake. Add a dollop of whipped cream or creamy frosting and it becomes an even better dessert.

Ingredients
- CAKE
- 2 cups flour
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 tablespoon cocoa
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon allspice
- 1 teaspoon cloves
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup shortening (part lard/mostly butter)
- 2 cups applesauce, unsweetened
- 2 - eggs
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 cup raisins
- TOPPING
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar, firmly packed

Step 1Except for sugar: whisk all dry ingredients together in large bowl, set aside.

Step 2Cream butter and sugar, then add lightly beaten eggs, dry ingredients, and applesauce beat until mixed well. Stir in nuts, chips and raisins.

Step 3Pour into greased 9x13 pan. Combine topping ingredients and sprinkle over batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes or until tests done.
