Got this from my late cousin--love the way it tastes! I've also played around with the spices, varying the amounts to make each cake a bit different from the last. You can also sub 2 cups of Bisquick for the flour, baking powder and baking soda and increase the applesauce to 2 cups for a fuller-bodied cake. Just bake about 10 minutes longer.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 c
    oil
  • 1/2 c
    granulated sugar (do not use extra-fine)
  • 1/2 c
    brown sugar, packed
  • 1
    egg
  • 1 1/2 c
    applesauce
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 2 c
    flour
  • 2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 3/4 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1 tsp
    nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp
    ground cloves
  • CINNAMON GLAZE

  • 1 c
    powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 Tbsp
    butter, softened
  • 2 Tbsp
    milk
  • 1/4 tsp
    cinnamon

How to Make Spicy Applesauce Cake

Step-by-Step

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 2 quart bundt or tube pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine oil, sugars, egg, applesauce, and vanilla. Beat until well-blended.
  3. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices. Add to applesauce mixture and beat until smooth.
  4. Pour into greased and floured pan and bake at 350 for 50 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. Turn out on rack to cool
  5. Combine ingredients for Cinnamon Glaze and blend until smooth. When cake is cool, drizzle with glaze, allowing it to drop down the side of the cake.
