spicy applesauce cake

Got this from my late cousin--love the way it tastes! I've also played around with the spices, varying the amounts to make each cake a bit different from the last. You can also sub 2 cups of Bisquick for the flour, baking powder and baking soda and increase the applesauce to 2 cups for a fuller-bodied cake. Just bake about 10 minutes longer.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups oil
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (do not use extra-fine)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 - egg
  • 1 1/2 cups applesauce
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • CINNAMON GLAZE
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

How To Make spicy applesauce cake

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 2 quart bundt or tube pan.
  • Step 2
    In a mixing bowl, combine oil, sugars, egg, applesauce, and vanilla. Beat until well-blended.
  • Step 3
    Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices. Add to applesauce mixture and beat until smooth.
  • Step 4
    Pour into greased and floured pan and bake at 350 for 50 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean. Turn out on rack to cool
  • Step 5
    Combine ingredients for Cinnamon Glaze and blend until smooth. When cake is cool, drizzle with glaze, allowing it to drop down the side of the cake.
