spiced apple cinnamon bars

A recent trip to a local orchard left me with an abundance of fresh apples. After experimenting with several different recipes, I came up with this one. :-)

I hope you enjoy them!

(Try mixing two or more different varieties of apples for a wide range of flavor. I like Jonathan, Jonagold, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith for baking)

Ingredients For spiced apple cinnamon bars

  • 2 c
    flour
  • 2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp
    nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp
    allspice (or slightly more)
  • 1/2 c
    butter (melted)
  • 3/4 c
    brown sugar (i prefer dark)
  • 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 2 lg
    eggs
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp
    almond extract
  • 1 1/2 c
    apples (peeled, chopped)
  • 1/2 c
    walnuts (finely chopped/optional)
  • 1 Tbsp
    sugar
  • 1 tsp
    cinnamon

How To Make spiced apple cinnamon bars

  • 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 9 x13 inch pan with non stick cooking spray. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and spices.

    In a large bowl, mix together melted butter, brown sugar and white sugar until smooth. Add eggs and extracts and blend well.

    Blend in flour mixture and then stir in the apples and walnuts (optional).

    Spread evenly in prepared pan. In a small bowl, combine remaining sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle on top.

    Bake for 30 minutes until center springs back when slightly touched. Cool and cut into bars.
