This is a Spanish cake recipe that's really easy to make. It's a really nice quick dessert.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour or cake flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons grated orange peel
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons orange liqueur (grand marnier, triple sec, etc)

How To Make spanish orange-almond cake (torta de almendra)

  • Step 1
    Heat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round (or 9x9 square) baking pan.
  • Step 2
    In a large bowl, beat for 30 seconds on low speed all ingredients (except the almonds, 1 Tbsp sugar and liqueur). Then beat on high for 3 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour batter into prepared pan. Sprinkle almonds on top of cake batter.
  • Step 3
    Bake in preheated oven for about 40 minutes for round pan or 45 minutes for square pan, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  • Step 4
    Remove pan from oven. Sprinkle 1 Tbsp sugar on surface of the hot cake. Then drizzle the orange liqueur over cake surface and let it absorb into the cake. Cool completely before slicing.
