I am a true chocoholic. I found this recipe while looking for something else; it caught my eye so I tried it out. I fell in love with the rich chocolaty cake.

  • 1/4 c
    cocoa, unsweetened
  • 1/4 c
    boiling water
  • 2 c
  • 1/2 c
    butter, softened
  • 1 c
    sour cream
  • 1 1/2 tsp
    vanilla extract
  • 2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 5
    egg whites
  • 2 can(s)
    chocolate frosting
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda

How to Make Sour Cream Choclate Cake


  1. Preheat oven to 350. Grease & flour two 9 in round cake pans.
  2. Combine cocoa powder &boiling water in a bowl & stir until chocolate is dissolved...about 30 seconds.
  3. Combine sugar & butter in large bowl. Beat with electric mixer till light & fluffy...1-2 minutes. Add cocoa mixture & beat 1 min. longer.Beat in sour cream, vanilla & baking soda. Add flour & salt. Mix 1 minute more.
  4. Beat egg whites in medium bowl till stiff peaks form...2-3 minutes. Gently fold into batter.
  5. Spoon batter into prepared pans. Bake till toothpick inserted in center comes out clean...25-28 minutes. Transfer to wire racks to cool. Cut each cake into 2 even layers for total of 4 layers.Spread frosting between the layers & over top & sides of cooled cake.
