This is my Aunt Janet's Recipe and I found this cake to be amazing. Better than a shoo fly pie I recently tried made in Lancaster County, PA and so moist.

Ingredients

  • CRUMB MIXTURE

  • 4 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 3/4 c
    oil ( can use extra virgin oil or vegetable oil or canola oil)
  • SET ASIDE 1 CUP OF CRUMB MIXTURE FOR TOPPING ON CAKE

  • STEP 2

  • 2 c
    boiling water
  • 1/2 c
    dark karo syrup
  • 1/2 c
    brer rabbit molasses
  • 1 Tbsp
    baking soda

How to Make Shoo Fly Cake

Step-by-Step

  1. Mix the crumb mixture together and set aside.
  2. Mix boiling water, karo syrup, and rabbit molasses together in a separate bowl. Add baking soda and stir, this will foam up so make sure the bowl is large enough.
  3. Add crumb mixture (except 1 cup) to liquid above and mix well.
  4. Pour into greased 13x9 cake pan. Sprinkle reserved crumb mixture to top of cake.
  5. Bake at 350 for 40 - 45 minutes.
    ENJOY.
