Here's a old recipe that is very good. Grandma made this one from memory and wrote down the instructions for me. In the 1940's this was a birthday cake or special occasion dessert.

prep time 15 Min
cook time 30 Min
method ---
yield 8 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 2 - squares semi-sweet chocolate
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • - whipped cream

How To Make saucepan cake (from the 1940's)

  • Step 1
Combine chocolate, salt, butter, sugar, raisins, and water in a heavy saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly until mixture reaches a full boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and then cook for 5 minutes at a simmer without stirring. Remove from heat and let stand 15 minutes.
  • Step 2
Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. At the end of the 15 minutes setting time for chocolate mixture stir dry ingredients into chocolate mixture. Fold in nuts. Do not beat. Only stir until mixed. Pour batter into a greased 8 inch square pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until cake pulls away from sides of pan. Serve warm with whipped cream.
