Here's a old recipe that is very good. Grandma made this one from memory and wrote down the instructions for me. In the 1940's this was a birthday cake or special occasion dessert.

Ingredients
- 2 - squares semi-sweet chocolate
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
- - whipped cream
How To Make saucepan cake (from the 1940's)

Step 1Combine chocolate, salt, butter, sugar, raisins, and water in a heavy saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly until mixture reaches a full boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and then cook for 5 minutes at a simmer without stirring. Remove from heat and let stand 15 minutes.

Step 2Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. At the end of the 15 minutes setting time for chocolate mixture stir dry ingredients into chocolate mixture. Fold in nuts. Do not beat. Only stir until mixed. Pour batter into a greased 8 inch square pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until cake pulls away from sides of pan. Serve warm with whipped cream.
