This cake recipe is from my Grandmother's Samson Garden Club cookbook published in 1973. Samson is a VERY small town in south Alabama. This is THE best Red Velvet Cake I have ever eaten. It has always been a hit!

Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 2 cups oil
- 2 - eggs
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon soda
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- 2-3 - 3 small or 2 large bottles of red food coloring
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- CREAM CHEESE FROSTING
- 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
- 1 stick butter, room temperature
- 1 package confectioners' sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
How To Make red velvet cake

Step 1Cream sugar and oil until well blended. Add eggs and beat until well blended. In a seperate bowl,sift flour, salt and soda, set aside. In a seperate bowl mix vinegar, cocoa powder and color then add to sugar and egg mixture. Beat until mixed well. Add flour alternately with buttermilk. Add Vanilla extract and beat well. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-45 minutes.

Step 2Frosting: Beat together cream cheese and butter for up to 6-7 minutes. Add Confectioners' Sugar and beat until smooth. Add vanilla extract and mix well. ENJOY!
