red velvet cake
Bea Liles asked me to post my red velvet cake recipe. I have 3 and have already posted a Quick Red Velvet Cake. This is the 2nd posting and was the first RV recipe I got in 1977. The frosting is different and I only made it until I found one for cream cheese frosting. I personally like the cream cheese better.

Ingredients
- RED VELVET CAKE
- 1/2 cup crisco shortening
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 bottle 2 oz. red food color
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons cocoa, unsweetened
- 2 1/2 cups plain flour
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- FROSTING FOR RED VELVET CAKE
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup butter
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup chopped pecans
How To Make red velvet cake

Step 1CAKE..

Step 2Preheat oven to 350*. Grease and flour 3 9" cake pans.

Step 3Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs.

Step 4Mix color, cocoa and vanilla. Add to creamed mixture.

Step 5Add flour and buttermilk alternately. Mix vinegar, soda, and salt together and stir into batter till well combined.

Step 6Bake 30 min. or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Cool completely before frosting.

Step 7FROSTING..

Step 8Beat butter and sugar till fluffy.

Step 9Cook flour and milk till thick. Cool and add to sugar mixture.

Step 10Beat until fluffy. Add vanilla and pecans.
